Link Exchanges An Element of the Old Internet?
A link exchange is when one site offers to link to your site if you link to their site. (What I have found is the exchange is usually not of equal importance.)
Many feel that this type of linking request come from newbies that send out generic e-mails requesting exchanges. Possibly, but not always. There are also linking companies that request that you exchange a link with one of their clients, in return, you get a link to, usually another client. Sound professional? I think not.
Why do people go after link exchanges? Many people go after link exchanges because they are trying to find a fast and easy way to drive traffic to their website or blog.
With that being said…not knowing who you are linking to can invariably hurt your online reputation. How? If a loyal reader is taking the time to read your content they have developed a measure of trust in what you say. If, a reader clicks on a link on your site or blog and finds a site full of ads, or the content that doesn’t even meet your own content standards – you may end up devaluing your site as well as the other sites that are linking to you.
And, Google, yes Google, hates linking schemes. Google’s business model is centered around providing people with quality search, and thus, quality content. If they find that you have participated in any linking schemes, such as excessive link exchanges, expect your site to go down in ranking.
In my view, link exchanges is becoming an element of the “old Internet”. The new Internet includes more business rules put in place by search engines, Google and the FTC. Which, I might say, brings an element of legitimacy to the Internet. My view, the one sure way to get a back link is through your own content. If the content is good, someone will link to you to share the information. Granted, it’s not the fastest way to get noticed, but it does preserve your online reputation.
And Social Media, makes the likes of Facebook and Twitter extremely relevant to today’s marketers and readers. And Google, is not blind to this fact. That is why Google launched “Caffeine” a web indexing system that crawls blogs, social media sites, commercial sites and user generated content at a faster rate (I believe it to be around 50% faster). What does this mean? It means, fresh content that is readily available for readers.
All this translates into a new way of thinking. What’s will increase your readership- networking, social media vehicles that produces fresh content, and most importantly quality content. The other-link exchanges can have one major disadvantage-a site filled with spam-filled links and less than quality content. So, which way do you want to go? I say, in with the new, and out with the old.

Is Social Media and E-Commerce Connecting?

Is Social Media and E-Commerce Connecting?
It seems that maybe e-commerce is coming full circle and now, joining the social media network. An example of this is Amazon new feature, though still in beta, which lets you tap into the Facebook network.
What’s it’s purpose? To allow you to get Amazon recommendations and discover your friends’ “Favorites and likes”. Here are some of the things that you can now discover with the new feature:
1. Recommendations for movies, music, etc. Though this is also based on your Facebook profile.
2. See Facebook friends’ Amazon Wish Lists more easily.
3. See upcoming birthdays.
4. Gift suggestions for friends based solely on their profile.
5. Explore your friends profiles to see who shares similar interests. However, Amazon assures all that no personal data will be shared with Facebook, and the company will not attempt to contact your Facebook friends.
What does that that mean for Facebook? It means that the role of the social media network may increase through advertising. And, let’s not forget about Google. With the increased competition between Google and Facebook may end up being a big win for e-commerce. Which means, not only the sale of virtual good but also the sale of merchandise.
This new direction by Facebook and Google was inevitable, but as with anything new, privacy will be an issue that may make some people a little skittish. Let’s face it, do you really want their friends to know what your recent purchases were on say, Amazon? Maybe it doesn’t bother you, but for some, it does. (By the way, Bing added a link to Facebook on their search results about a year ago. Interesting isn’t it.)
To conclude, the old way of getting advice about a product or service was through word-of-mouth, which, as you all know, the advice may have come after you bought the “wrong product or service”. On the other hand, online social media networking, can give you information/advice you need at lightning speed-and hopefully before you bought the product.
This means, for those e-commerce stores that give you a quality service or product, be prepared for an increase in consumer traffic. For those e-commerce stores where the experience is not up to consumer expectations, it’s time to make some changes, because word on the Internet travels very quickly.

Social Media and List Building
I found an article that I found to be rather interesting. The topic is using social media with listing building. His emphasis was with being “authentic” and how your authenticity can bring people to your site or blog.
Basically Social Media can work. It can build your brand and image, only if you are authentic. With anything online, being authentic should never be far from your thoughts. People cannot see you. It is your words alone that can build an online relationship with the people who are visiting your site/blog. If your relationship with your audience is fake-your audience will quickly see through it-and click away.
This article is a good read, it’s can possibly allow you to think differently about building relationships online with social media, and thus, your brand and image. Here’s a prelude to what the article is about:
