SEO or PPC-Which is Better?

Both SEO and PPC have their advantages and disadvantages. I’m sure many people are rethinking their SEo strategies since the Panda update by Google.

Is SEO (Search Engine Optimization) still viable way of marketing your website? I definitely would not overlook it. And since the Panda update I would definitely be looking at my web pages if they have fallen because of the algorithm. Such as:

1. Too many of the same keywords repeated over and over again (keyword stuffing). This is a warning, and would lower your ranking and prevent your page from being indexed.

2. Are your keywords or keyword phases within 2% of the total words on your articles.

3. Most importantly, is your content up to par with the new Panda standards. If not, it’s time to do some reworking of your content.

4. If you are selling products, does your products have enough description to go along with your ad? You should have at least 150 words of description for each product.

If you have quality content and you know you are in compliance with Google, and you are not seeing the results you want, you may want to look at PPC.

Why PPC

There are several advantages with PPC, especially if you have a new website. Paid search ads gives you the following advantages:

1. You do not have to worry about the ups and downs of Google’s algorithm.
2. If your Adwords ads are targeted, you will know that your target market is going to be reaching your site, which possibly means more sales.
3. Great for time sensitvie promotions
4. If you have a limited sales seasons, you can saturate the market while the demand is high
5. You can regulate traffic volume
6. If you have a new site, the paid search ads will get buying traffic to your site faster.

Okay, here is the down side for PPC, if you are a new site, and unfamiliar with paid per click advertising you can lose money that you may not have to spend. This, I am afraid the “learning curve element” is true for anyone, who have never used PPC advertising, whether your site is new or not.

SEO though many may not want to take the time to learn it, is a great avenue for small businesses to be noticed. If you take your time, and do it right, you can see people coming to your site. And, if you do it yourself, you save money.

PPC offers a learning curve with an outlay of money. If you want to get into the PPC marketing arena I would advise searching for a reliable book on the subject.

Is SEO or PPC better? It depends where you are at in the game, and the money, if you have any, that you want to put into your PPC campaign.  Both offer targeted results, but each require some learning. I personally would begin with learning SEO. Why, it will help you with your PPC campaign. Each, by the way, utilizes keywords.

All may know, you can write an article for content on your site, or as a means to advertise your site or products. I will be discussing the later.

Article marketing can be a long term solution to getting targeted traffic to your site. The results of article marketing can be seen over time. Thus, if you want an immediate solution, there is PPC advertising. But if you’re on a tight budget, you may not be willing to outlay some money, especially if you’re not comfortable with the PPC process.

So what are the benefits of writing an article for advertising sake?

  1. Long term solution to getting targeted traffic-if the article is relevant to the times.
  2. A free way to advertise
  3. Search engines likes relevant content.

What are the drawbacks to writing an article for advertising

  1. Not a quick solution-may see return in a week or two, or maybe a month.
  2. The relevancy of the article will determine it’s life. It could say in the serps for a month, a year, or maybe even 5 or more years. It is possible.
  3. It takes work. If you decide you don’t want to write or feel you cannot write, than it may cost you to have someone write an article for you.

As everyone knows, PPC can be expensive if you do not do your research on how it works, how much it costs (versus how much you can afford to spend) and if it will benefit your website. If you do your research and prepare to use PPC it can be useful in the short term.

The Last Blog entry I discussed, covered the long-term benefits of SEO, this week’s blog entry I’ll discuss the short-term benefits of PPC for your website. But let’s first begin with the definition, for those new to PPC.

PPC -what is it?

PPC is pay-per-click advertising. You pay the search engines for showing your ads on their search and content networks. The price is driven by: price per keyword and the price you want to pay on a daily basis. You set both, the daily budget and the price per click for your ads campaign. The success of your campaign will be, obviously, how many sales you make against the price you paid for the ads. So what are the benefits and drawbacks of PPC?

Benefits of PPC
Pay-Per-Click advertising does have it’s benefits.

  • Immediate exposure and sales if you find the right keyword combination and you construct the right ad that will give you the conversion you need.
  • You can experiment with more than one ad and keyword combination. You are not limited by the number of keywords that you use.
  • Keywords are more targeted to your web page/website
  • Gives you traffic in the short term. If you are a new site this can help give your website quicker exposure on the Internet.
  • Great for seasonal items or time sensitive promotions
  • Great for feedback. (Translated-if your ads do not spark a click, you have a problem with your landing page, keywords, or ad(s)
  • PPC is more goal driven. You can manipulate keywords and ads to help drive conversions

Drawbacks of PPC

Yes, there are drawbacks to Pay-per-click advertising. I know, I’m hearing the groaning now. But it’s better to be aware, than to jump blindly into the PPC pool.

  • PPC can continue only as long as your budget holds up
  • PPC does not go across all search engines- it only hits the search engine that you are paying to show your ads
  • Your PPC success is limited by your PPC knowledge
  • If you don’t know what you are doing, you can quickly lose your budget for the full year.

As you can see, PPC is a great way to get targeted traffic to your site in the short term. However, the major drawback is the price you have to pay to get that targeted traffic. If you want to try your hand with PPC, I’d suggest learning some of the ins and out of Pay-Per-Click Advertising, especially if you’re on a tight budget.
