Google +1 A New Addition

Google +1 A New Addition

Beginning in October Google will begin displaying the +1 button on display ads on sites. Supposedly, people will be able to endorse a specific ad and make them more likely to appear to their social connections.

There hope is that these recommendations could lead readers to notice ads on your site more, and with it, more clicks and higher returns.

For example: Jill sees an ad that looks like a good deal on flights over the Christmas holiday. Jill +1′s the ad, so that her friends might find value with this deal. When contacts and friends sign in to their Google account, they’ll be able to see the referring friend, Jill’s picture at the bottom of the ad, stating that she had +1′d it.

However, don’t get to excited yet. +1 button clicks are not counted as clicks on ads. There hope is that the +1 will deliver more useful ads to your users, which will result in higher returns over time.

On mobile, the +1 will replace the “g’ logo and recommendations will appear for several seconds, then fade out.

However, if you feel that this +1 feature is more of a nuisance for your users you can opt out, beginning in October, when the ads will start displaying for all.

For those waiting for an invite, it’s no longer necessary. Google +1 is now open to the public

Google, SEO and One Page Results

Google, SEO and One Page Results

The title is rather interesting isn’t it. And with anything that is Google and one page results everyone is listening or should be if you utilize SEO.

It seems that Google is testing a new design model with the search results page, it’s called infinite scrolling. Within the result pages, you will still see the top search box and navigation bar, as well as, the left panel, but the result pages will be a little more user friendly. If you want to see a sample of infinite scrolling, you just need to take a look at Google Images.

Improvement for the User:

1. Infinite scrolling could improve the user’s experience, by speeding up the search process.

2. For those that do research, this will give them a wider search option to explore what is out there on the Internet.

Improvement for Websites

The infinite scroll could improve chances for websites that are sitting on page two or three, a greater opportunity of being seen.

Okay, so how is this going to affect SEO?

SEO and  Infinite Scrolling

Many fear that SEO may become irrelevant because of the improved scrolling opportunities by Google. I do not believe infinite scrolling will make SEO go away. Remember, the search engines still need to know how to
categorize web pages and that is still through SEO and keywords. However, it will make people who have sites that have content that is short on quality, a need for quick improvements. Why? There is a greater opportunity with this feature for users to scan and skip to sites that actually give them the content they want.

Bottom line, Google has, and is making improvements that emphasize user experience. This has been seen with all of the Panda Updates. What has Panda Updates done? It has forced website owners to improve their sites or risk being loss in the Internet abyss. You can complain, but remember, change is constant on the Internet.

Article Spinners-Do They Really Work?

Article Spinners-Do They Really Work?

Writing articles should mean writing quality content. However, some people feel that they can write one quality article and spin it into many with article creation software. But what do you get with this type of software?

If the individual does not manually go over the content that has just been spun they will literally see a mass of words that make little or no sense. I’ve read, or tried to read a spun article. Yes, the title was enticing, but the content was senseless and frustrating to read. Is it that noticeable?

Yes, it is extremely noticeable. The article(s) that I have read had  language that was disjointed and meaningless. And, there was no white space between the words. In my opinion, this is a great way for your article to be denied. So, what can you do?

If you decide to use an article spinner, read the spun copy, correct the spacing, the words for meaning and manually place the articles in a few article directories. Why? You will be more apt to retain your online creditability and have your article accepted. Are you saving time? No, but in this case, you’ll be saving your creditability and your potential for traffic.

However, if you choose to use an article spinner and do not heed my warning. In most cases you will find that:

1) Google will most certainly place your article in the abyss of the Internet for no one to see because it doesn’t offer quality content.

2) Readers will not read your article. They will click away after trying to read the first paragraph of unreadable, and beyond incomprehensible text.

3) Article Directories will not accept your article, if there is human intervention.

To conclude, with the last slap that Google has given the Internet regarding content, you need to be concerned about quality of content. If you’re not concerned, then anticipate losing your place in the search engines and along with it, a loss of traffic.

Is Google To Retire Blogger

Rumor has it that is Google retiring the Blogger name. Google is planning on retiring the name, and renaming it as a Google product.

This move is an effort to unify its brand in relation to it’s new product Google+. Don’t worry Blogger is not going to go away, just its name. In the rumor mill, “Google Blogs” will be Blogger new name. The rebranding is said to be in about 4 to 6 weeks.

As to how this transition will take place, only Google knows.

Note: Picasa is also getting a new name, “Google Photos”.

Panda 2.2 Yet Another Algorithm Update?

Panda 2.2 Yet Another Algorithm Update?
People are now preparing, or trying to prepare for the next Panda update that Google announced on June 9, 2011.

The update will target a common webmaster complaint, which is sites that scrape and re-publish content and out-rank the original source of the content.

In the meantime, Matt Cutts has reiterated that they will continue to tweak and update the Panda algorithm.

Your Index Pages and Panda

Here is a quick rundown on how Google is using the Panda algorithm and it’s many tweaks on your indexed pages.

1. Google does constantly scan for pages that might have hidden text. If it spots these pages, they could very well access a penalty on that site.

2. Google does not constantly scan for pages that might get hit by the Panda penalty. Instead they manually runs the Panda algorithm which then determines web sites that should be hit by it.

What does this mean for those websites that have made changes to their site-that is beneficial in nature. The changes the webmaster have made will not be registered by Google until the next Panda assessment. And, though Google would not say, many theorize that is could run every few weeks.

I know many are frustrated, I included. But, with anything on the Internet, change is a “constant” when you work on the Internet. Accept it, and move forward the best you can, and stay informed.

Google and Authored Content on Your Website

Google and Authored Content on Your Website

Beginning on June 7 Google announced on their blog that they were going to begin supporting authorship markup. This currently is an experiment in which they are using data to help people find content from great authors in their search results.

Thus, if a webmaster has many authors on their website they can now use what Google called “authorship markup” for your site. If the webmaster has an author page that describes and identifies the author, they can connect the author’s articles through that author page.

The markup that Google uses is in accordance with existing standards, such as HTML5(rel=”author”) and XFN (rel=”me”). This will enable search engines to identify the work by the same author across the web. They have been doing some testing from CNET, Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly and others to get an
idea of how it will work.

If it works, it will bring the quality authors to the forefront. And for those that write articles, the new standards will require you to step your writing up a couple of notches, or risk not being noticed. Does that mean spun articles are out? I don’t know, but I hope so.

If you ever seen a poorly written spun article, you would know why I say that. A lot of authors that spin an article don’t take the time to read the article. They just put it out on the Internet with all its joined letters and ill-chosen words, making the article unreadable.

So enough on spun articles, if you want to learn more about implementing authorship markup, check out Google Webmaster Central Authorship.

G-Wallet What Is It?

G-Wallet What Is It?

What is G-Wallet? We know that it is something that has just been introduced by Google. But what can Google Wallet do and is it available to all?

Currently Google Wallet is not available to all consumers because it’s still in a testing mode. Their hope is that by summer it will be available to consumers. When it does become available, it’s free app will only be made available on the Nexus S 4G by Google from Sprint. However, as time goes by, it’s free app will become available on different units. It eventual purpose is to make you more mobile by storing credit cards, coupons, boarding passes, ID and even keys, all at your phone’s fingertips.

I am sure many will say, that’s great but what about security. If your phone with Google Wallet is lost or stolen you will have to contact your credit card company(s) for assistance, as you would with any credit card now.

However, Google will protect your payment credentials by storing them in a chip called “Secure Element”. This chip is isolated on the Nexus S 4G (currently) main OS and hardware. As to other devices, that is still unclear.

Even Google Wallet itself will have limited access to Secure Element. It will not be able to read or write data from memory, and with the multiple levels of protection at the hardware level it will prevent snooping or tampering. The ultimate goal by Google is to be able to creat virtual versions of all plastic cards that are in existence today, even establishing APIs that issuing banks can develop.

This creation seems interesting. However, PayPal is not at all pleased by this creation and there is a lawsuit pending against Google. Why? They (PayPal) allege there may have been a breach of confidential information by two former employees. Google at this point has made no comment.

For a complete rundown on what Google is wanting Google Wallet to be capable of check out “43 Things You Should Know About Google Wallet“.

Is Shortened URLs Acceptable

Is Shortened URLs Acceptable?

With so many changes taking place, I began to question everything, or be conscious of a little more than I did before the Panda Update. In fact, I began to wonder if possibly the shortened URL I was using may cause a problem with Google spiders when using it within my content for SEO purposes? Why do I ask this? Because it is a redirect, and sometimes Google spiders do not take too kindly to redirects.

However, according to Matt Cutts, if their spider finds a custom URL shortener, like bit.ly or goo.gl, they will pass the PageRank to the final destination. Though his comment was a little wordy, it means, yes your can use URL shorteners in your SEO, as long as the URL shortener is known to behave itself.

What is nice to know is that both the anchor text and the Page Rank will all flow through the URL. Goo.gl and Bit.ly are two of the different URL shorteners named. Though just an example, the emphasis was on the reliability of the behavior of these shorteners. If they are well-behaved and the 301 redirect goes where they are suppose to go, then Google has no problem. Maybe these two shorteners were a helpful suggestion, I’m not sure. But I guess I’ll try to use bit.ly if I need an URL shortened.

Anyway, many,  didn’t think much about an URL shortener’s behavior. I definitely let my guard down on this bit of news. What news, not all shorteners behave nicely. However, since a person’s livelihood can way in the balance, I was glad that Google gave several examples of several shorteners.

Yeah, I know, goo.gl is a Google shortener, but bit.ly is not.  Currently Google’s shortener only works with Chrome. So if you have Chrome, go for it. However, if you use another something other than Chrome, you may want to use bit.ly.

You may wonder about why I have a concern about what or if you can use an URL shortener? If the spider backs away from the shortened URL, you will not get your page indexed, if the page is not indexed, don’t expect to many visitors.

BidVertiser Advertising Network

Choosing the right affiliate network can be difficult but BidVertiser is one of the best in this industry.

BidVertiser is a pay-per-click advertising network that allows publisher to earn from putting ads on their websites.

Paypal is the payment method used by BidVertiser to pay its publishers and the minimum amount is $10. BidVertiser is in direct competition with Google Adsense and the low payout of just $10 is the most important advantage of BidVertiser. For bloggers this low payout is very attractive.

Ads Formats are similar to Google Adsense but it is more difficult to manage your ads because you must make the changes only inside BidVertiser members’ area.

You can shoose to show only the ads with the highest cost per thousands impressions (CPM) but you will get a very limited numbers of ads that might be irrelevant to the content of your website.

You can’t use BidVertiser Ads and Google Ads on the same page because you will be in direct violation of the Google Adsense Program Policy.

BidVertiser could be a great tool to monetize your website especially if you are a beginner and want a low payout.

A Panda Update-Advice From Google

A Panda Update-Advice From Google

Since the Panda update, many websites have been struggling to get a handle on how to repair the damage. However, since the algorithm that Google created for this new update or any update for that matter, is not divulged, no one is quite sure how to fix their problem. It’s like swimming in a shallow pool with weights on.

Finally Google has opened up and has developed a list of questions you need to ask about a page or an article. As we all know, and as stated by Google, search is a complicated and evolving art and science. Instead of focusing on specific tweaks to your pages, they want to encourage users to ask themselves a series of questions regarding their content.

However, before diving into the questions, there was one specific piece of information that I found important in regards to low-quality content. Google stated that low-quality content on some parts of a website can impact the whole site’s ranking. Thus, you have consider the following options: 1) remove the low quality pages; 2) merge or improve the content of low quality pages, or: 3) move the low quality pages to a different domain.

For details on the questions, check out Google Panda Update By Chris Crum

I would also like to refer you to Article Marketing in Crisis that I wrote earlier, it gives you additional advise, from Google on how to deal with your low quality pages.

Google ‘s Google +1 New Social Strategy

Google’s “Google +1″ New Social Strategy

Google’s new social strategy now will include the Google +1 button. The +1 will be shown in both Adsense ads and within search. The + 1 doesn’t affect the AdSense ad units on your site, but it can improve the way your pages appear in Google search.

The purpose and expectations of this personalized annotation is to help sites stand out by helping users see when their Google search results are personally relevant to them. The hope is the +1′s will increase both your quality and quantity of Google search traffic.

Here’s how it works. When the +1′s are public, Google will be able to show any signed-in individual
+1 results. The Google +1 button will not just be for search results. They are also working on a +1 button that you can put on your web pages as well. This is another way in which Google can make it easier for a webmaster to allow people to recommend their content on Google search without leaving their site.

If you want to be notified when the +1 button is available for your site, you can sign up for email updates at their +1 webmaster site.  Please note: Currently the +1 button will appear for English searches only on Google.com, but they will then begin work on adding more languages in the future.

Your Content and the Algorithm Change

If you want to make money online you can click here to download our Secret Affiliate Book.

Your Content and the Algorithm Change

Google is looking for ways in which to improve the quality of their searches. That means filtering out content spam. This brings up some issues about content which includes addressing issues about content scraping, republishing or copying of content and content farms.

Reducing Search Engine Spam
Matt Cutts gave an update on his blog regarding algorithm changes that is being implemented to reduce search engine spam.

It’s Google’s hope to decrease spam. The site(s) that Google is trying to take aim at are the sites that copy others’ content, as well as, sites that have low levels of original content. These changes will affect those who scrape, republish or copy others content. Why? In some cases, the website that is scraping another’s content has ranked higher than the original sources.

For those blogs or websites who rely on content, you may find in the near future that your content will become more valuable. Why? If you have the original content you will not be out-ranked by other sites republishing your content (with or without your permission).

Content Farms
There has also been quite a buzz about content farms. For those who are not familiar with what a content farm is, let me give you a quick definition. A content farm has many authors writing content on different topics, and in some cases, giving the author a portion of their Adsense revenue. Both the company and the author can benefit, (more so the company)  if the content is a good draw in the search engines. Yes, Content is good, but many of the content farms has a tendency to ignore the quality of the content and instead emphasize popular keywords to get the article to the top.

Google Baby Step to Content Farm Control
What is Google doing about content farms? Google has introduced an extension to Google’s Chrome browser that is called the “Personal Blocklist”. The software will allow you to remove a site from future searches. How is this done? Personal Blocklist will let you click a small link that is below each search result. This will remove the site from any of your future searches. After you have made those blocks, anytime you do a search you will only see those sites momentarily before Personal Blocklist removes them from your view. You will then see a message by Personal Blocklist stating that some of the results were removed.

You can recover those blocked links by clicking a “show” link next to the message or by clicking a red icon, with a hand facing outwards in a “stop” gesture, in Chrome’s toolbar. You may be thinking that this baby step  is counterproductive and not helping remove content that is not helpful. This is not true. According to Matt Cutts:

“If installed, the extension also sends blocked site information to Google, and we will study the resulting feedback and explore using it as a potential ranking signal for our search results.”

Could this mean trouble for content farms? Maybe, maybe not. I’ve read many comments regarding content farms. Some people state that, “no it won’t hit sites like Demand Media, because Google is only looking to remove shallow or low-quality content”. Other states, “yes, it may help improve the quality of the searches”.

My take on the issue is relatively simple. People can define content farms in any way or form they want in order to soothe their troubling soul and their worry about lost income. But the bottom line is clear, it’s only Google definition and their algorithm that will matter in the end.

Adsense Public Service Ads Retiring?

If you want to make money online you can click here to download our Secret Affiliate Book.

Adsense Public Service Ads Retiring?

Yes, it does look like Google is retiring the Public Service Ad. Per Google Adsense Team, Google is beginning to slowly remove the Public Service Ads from Adsense sites. Even though the public service ads are being retired, it looks like Google will be creating new opportunities for their non-profit partners.

For those new to Adsense or for those who need a quick review, a PSA (Public Service Ad) is an unpaid ad that appears on publisher sites when there are not paid ads available to service that particular page. The predominant reason these ads appear is due to no relevant ads available for that particular page.

However, Google non-profit partners will not be left in the cold. Google will continue to offer free AdWords advertising for these advertisers through Google Grants. For those advertisers in the Google Grants program, you’ll see no changes and you will continue to receive earnings from the valid clicks and impressions.

For Adsense publishers, if you selected Public Service Ads in the “Backup Ads” in the new Adsense interface (Alternate ads or colors in the old interface) you’re begin to see that it will be replaced with a blank space. If you opted to show non-Google ads from another URL or to show a solid color, you wont be affect by this change.

You will eventually see that the PSA option will no longer be available to choose. Even though the PSA option is being removed, they are working on new backup ad options.

To update the settings for your backup ads, you can sign in to your account and do the following:

1. New Interface: Visit “My Ads”, Select ad unit you like to update, then change settings for “Backup ads”.

2. Old Interface: Go To “Manage Ads” under My Account click “Edit Ad Settings” for the unit you’d like to change.

Google 2010 – Experiments and Changes

If you want to make money online you can click here to download our Secret Affiliate Book.

Google 2010-Experiments and Changes

2010 was a very interesting year for Google. Here are several examples:

Google Adwords Changes 2010- Good made a change in the way in which it handles display URLS for their Google Adwords platform. Before, you could create an ad linking to a blog using this type of URL – http://name.blogspot.com. But because the blogsphere has grown they now require the display URL to reflect the specific blog reached upon clicking the ad.

Google outlines its Display URL guidelines here. They include:

1. The display url must actually reflect the domain of your landing page so they know where they will be when they click on your link.
2. Display url within each ad group must have the same domain.
3. Display url cannot be used as another line of ad text.
4. Your display url must include your extension. (.biz, .com, etc.)
5. If your destintion url is too long, then use your home page url.

Google Fast Flip – I must say, I was really under a rock with this one. This is where Google let’s you “flip” through news articles on the web, just like a handheld magazine. The Fast Flip is at the bottom of Google News and it has some quality publications. For example, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Huffington Post, Popular Science, Reuters, U.S. News and WOrd Report.

Even though people like the idea, there are still some issues that have to be worked out before avid news readers will accept Fast Flip.

The criticisms:

1. It doesn’t flip pages, but slides them across the screen, making news hard to access, not easier.
2. Some are wondering if any of the Adsense units on the site will make newspapers any money.
3. Many feel the iPhone version of Fast Flip is useless. Unlike the desktop you can’t read anything because the text is too small. Clicking zoom doesn’t help either because it won’t fit on the iPhone screen size and be actually readable. It seems Google expects you to pan around the page to read the text.

There is still hope, since Fast Flip holds a Google Labs status, which means that it has not transitioned out to being classified as a full-fledged feature of Google News. Will it make it out of the Google labs phase? Time will tell.

These are only two examples, in the next posts, I go through some other changes and experiments.

New Adsense Structure

If you want to make money online you can click here to download our Secret Affiliate Book.

New Adsense Structure

Well, it looks like Adsense has created a new  interface for everyone to work with. It’s suppose to make things a little easier for you to see to analyze your Adsense ads. If you haven’t already gotten the new beta interface in your account, you will soon. You’ll know it because Google will either send you an email saying they activated the New Adsense interface or you’ll see a link called “beta Adsense interface”.

I’ve been playing around with the new interface.. I do agree that it will be easier to get a quick visual from  the customized graphs, as well as, run more detailed performance reports to analyze the amount you’ve made from various ad formats, ad sizes, bid types, etc.

There a “What’s New” section that you might want to look at. (You’ll see that once you get into the beta interface). Once you click on the “What’s New” you can look at the controls. Which of course is where I went. It gives you an overview of everything.

I decided to roam through the interface to see some of the things I had available to me. The one area I looked at is the tab called “Allow Block ads”. You will find that you really may not want all the different categories of ads running. But before blocking them off, be sure and see if the category you are thinking about blocking is giving you clicks or not. Anyway, in this section you’ll find:

1) ad controls,
2) advertise site, category and ad network blocking
3) Ad review center The ad review center has been update to make it easier for you to review ads that been placement targeted to your site. Here you will be able to search for ads by: 1) ad type 2) keyword 3) URL
4) ad network, and; 5) choose to approve add allow or block them.

Category block-as with the old interface, allows you to block categories of ads from showing up on your site. Such as: politics, religion, dating ads etc.

Home area: gives you an overview, payments (nice, it’s right front and center), messages, account setting, and resources (This area gives you a nice help area).

Creating New Ads

To create a new ad you’ll find it under “My ads”.

There will be a button that says “New Ad unit”.

You’ll see everything under the ad:
Name
Size
Ad type
Color palette
Font family, font size, and corner styles
and the custom channel.

I’ve noticed that you no longer see, or have a separate “color palette section”. It’s self-contained within each ad.

This is a quick run through of what I saw. As with anything, it will take a little time to get comfortable with the changes. But all in all, I like the changes.

Here is a quick video you can watch to get a close up look at what the new Interface looks like.
